My name is Jay Bianco and I’m a filmmaker and a costumer.
That’s the sort of introduction you get in certain meeting-types, but I guess it’s appropriate. You see, I’ve made films my whole life. It’s what I do, it’s in my blood, and I do it well. I’ve also been going to comic book conventions and the like for a couple of decades now, and while I was just a con-goer, I noticed something interesting – Costumers. People going to these conventions, dressing up like their favourite characters and having a great time at the conventions while people like me were just walking around, buying stuff and taking the odd picture.
Fast forward to now…
In 2005 I had the means and desire to get a movie-grade costume. Not much for convention going, but just to have in my collection. A couple of years later, I was interested in another costume, and in my research, I stumbled upon a growing community, a culture, of people that did this. This is what they do. They build these costumes, they go to conventions. I also stumbled upon a worldwide costuming group that utilizes these movie-quality costumes for charity work all around the world.
So, in 2010, I joined up. Then my wife joined up. Then my kids joined up. And now I’m a full-fledged costumer that spends his time making films, researching the next costume I want to build, and using these costumes for some fantastic causes like charity walks, visiting kids in the hospital, bringing magic and smiles to everyone of all ages. And I’ve began to notice that this whole costuming and cosplaying thing is getting pretty huge and mainstream….and no one has ever bothered to make a film about it – a REAL film about it – exploring it, telling the story of the costuming and cosplaying culture as a whole.
And who better to do it than me? I’m a filmmaker. Have been my entire life. I’m also a costumer, and have been a part of this ever-growing community for a long time now.
So here I am.
“Cos-Culture” is a never-before-seen look at the Cosplay and Costuming culture that is emerging across the globe from WITHIN the community. Unfortunately, this hobby has a bit of a negative image with the press and non-costumers, and this film is targeted at getting rid of that negative image. We are going to show in no uncertain terms that there is nothing “wrong with us”. We’re not all freaky losers living in their mother’s basement, uber-geek-virgins that have never and will never know the touch of the opposite sex. That we are all PEOPLE. We run the gamut from busboys to waitresses to police officers to fire fighters to doctors to lawyers to students…
We are brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, etc, etc. and many of us use this hobby for the betterment of our communities – we take part in charity walks, charity photo booths and we even visit sick and terminal children in the hospital.
We’ll also take an in-depth look into any and all controversial topics such as the community-dividing “Cosplay =/= Consent”! The interviews are real, with real people – nothing is scripted, NO subject is taboo!
The goal for this film is to be a feature length (at LEAST 90 minutes long), high production value look at the Cosplay and Costuming Communities up close and personal, right from the mouths of the Cosplayers and Costumers themselves and it’s being done BY costumers.
What We Need & What You Get
The funding goal for this film is $75,000 CDN.
The funding will go directly and solely into production costs. Those costs include but are not limited to: purchasing professional, industry grade, HD cameras, industry standard lighting rigs, industry standard software, industry standard boom microphones and lapel microphones, industry standard reflector disc kits and diffuser panels. Travel to the various conventions across North America and throughout Europe. The goal is to view costuming through a wide lense, encompassing costumers all over the world.
Should we somehow have extra funding after all of this is done, or should we manage to exceed our goal, every single dime will go right back into the production costs – BETTER equipment, MORE travel to speak with MORE Cosplayers and Costumers, etc., etc.
Should we NOT meet our goal, whatever funding we DO raise will go into obtaining whatever we can in order to make this film. This film WILL be made. I have a genuine need to make this film, so I’ll do everything I can to make it.
My role in this film is that of the Director, Cinematographer, Co-writer and Editor. My crew and I will not take a single penny of this money. This is a labour of love for us, this is something that is close to our hearts and something we believe in, and as a result, we will only get a PORTION of the proceeds of the sales of this film once it’s finished and up for sale to the public. A portion of the proceeds will also go to BC Children’s Hospital and The Abbotsford Children’s Hospice.
We are currently in Pre-Production, setting up timetables, writing, beginning interview time proposals and this funding pitch and campaign. Once funding is received, filming is going to take place over an 8 to 12 month period, due to setting up travel for interviews that take place in and out of conventions and events that take place throughout the year. Post Production is expected to take around 6 to 8 months.
This project is extremely important to me, but also to the community – both the cosplayer and non-cosplayer communities. This is the first time that we will take the time needed to delve into the costuming community, to meet the people that do this on a very personal, honest level, and to see them and the hobby for what they are – people having fun in their hobby!
Being a married Father of 3 that costumes with my wife and sons for local charities, and being a filmmaker makes this film probably one of the most important films I will ever make in my life. And I can’t do it without your help. Our story can’t be told without your help. The world will be denied an amazing and entertaining movie experience without your help.
Won’t you take this opportunity to make a true difference?
Other Ways You Can Help
I’m a realistic guy. I know that times are hard and not everyone has money to spend. That’s exactly why I’m here doing this! But if you can’t contribute to this cause but you want to help us, then please, by all means, tell everyone about us! Pass this page around to everyone you know! Spam the heck out of it! Word of mouth is the only thing that helps filmmakers like me and causes like this!
The more people that know about us, the better chance we have. We can’t do this without your help, any help.
On my campaign site, there is a list of fantastic perks that are available in each of the Contribution Packages.
